Canada's national holiday, Canada Day, also known as Canada's birthday, is celebrated every year on July 1.
While Canadians across the country and around the world show their pride in their history, culture and achievements, the day dates back to 1867, with many celebrations taking place across the country.
History of Canada Day
On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act, now known as the Constitution Act 1867, established Canada as a country.
On June 20, 1868, Governor General Lord Monck signed a proclamation from Queen Victoria requesting that all subjects in Canada celebrate July 1.
In 1879, a federal law made July 1 a statutory holiday as the "anniversary of Confederation" and was later called "Dominion Day".
Why is it called Dominion Day?
Dominion Day commemorated the granting of Dominion status to certain countries. The term refers to autonomous communities within the British Empire, equal in status, not in any way subordinate to each other in internal or external affairs, but having a common allegiance to the Crown and united as members of the British Commonwealth.
On October 27, 1982, July 1, Dominion Day officially became Canada Day.
The day symbolizes Canada's independence
The Canada Act of 1982 returned the British North America Act from the British to the Canadian Parliament and Canada became a fully independent country.
At the same time, the national holiday was renamed Canada Day. It is celebrated with parades, flag displays, the singing of the national anthem "O Canada" and fireworks.
When July 1 falls on a Sunday, the national day is celebrated the following day.
How is it celebrated?
For Canada Day, many communities across the country host organized celebrations, often outdoor events, such as parades, carnivals, festivals, fireworks, free concerts and citizenship ceremonies.
In addition to this year's celebrations, a special playlist of artists who will be performing on Canada Day has been created.
