What is Canadian Express Entry? What are the Application and Admission Requirements?

Updated: Oct 16

Canada stands out as one of the most popular countries worldwide for its immigration policies. The country has many advantages such as a quality standard of living, advanced healthcare and a strong economy. For these reasons, the number of people who want to immigrate to Canada is increasing every year.

The Express Entry system, which is one of the preferred methods for those who want to settle and live in Canada permanently, both provides practicality for applicants and attracts qualified immigrants who meet Canada's needs. In this blog post, we will discuss what the Express Entry system is, how it works and what you should pay attention to during the application process.

What is Canada Express Entry?

At C&C Canada Education, Visa, and Immigration, one of the services we offer to individuals wishing to immigrate to Canada is the Express Entry application process. Canada Express Entry is an immigration system that was launched in 2015 to attract skilled workers to the country.

The Canadian government uses this system to select and invite individuals who will contribute to the country's economic growth and meet its labor market needs. Express Entry evaluates candidates based on specific criteria, and those with the highest scores are invited to apply for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada.

The Express Entry system covers three main immigration programs aimed at meeting Canada’s skilled labor needs:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): This program is for individuals with high education levels and professional work experience in specialized fields. Factors such as work experience, education level, language proficiency, and adaptability are considered.

  2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): This program is designed for individuals skilled in specific trades, particularly in technical and craftsmanship jobs. Candidates should either have a valid job offer or be certified by a Canadian province.

  3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC): This program is for individuals who have gained work experience in Canada. It is aimed at those who have adapted to the Canadian workforce through temporary work permits and now seek permanent residency.

Individuals eligible for one of these programs can apply through the Express Entry system to immigrate to Canada. For instance, a person working as an engineer in Turkey with a master's degree could apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program and obtain permanent residency (PR) in Canada. Additionally, candidates must meet criteria such as language proficiency (IELTS/TEF) and sufficient work experience.

Express Entry System: How Does It Work?

The Express Entry system is a step-by-step process for obtaining permanent residency in Canada. Initially, candidates create an online profile to apply through the Canadian immigration system. During the profile creation, candidates are asked to provide information about their education, work experience, language proficiency, and other personal details. It's crucial to provide accurate and complete information, as this will significantly impact the assessment of the application.

Point System and Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score: Candidates are assessed using a point-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). This system awards points based on factors such as education level, language skills, work experience, age, and employment status in Canada. The CRS score determines a candidate's ranking within the Express Entry pool. The higher the score, the better the chances of receiving an invitation for permanent residency.

Express Entry Draw: At regular intervals, the Canadian government conducts draws to select candidates with the highest CRS scores from the Express Entry pool and issues them an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. These draws typically occur every two weeks but may vary. For example, in a draw held in October 2023, candidates with a CRS score of 490 or above received ITAs. It’s important to follow previous draw results to get an idea of the required CRS scores for future draws.

Application Process: Once a candidate receives an ITA, they have 60 days to submit their application for permanent residency. During this time, they must gather and submit all required documents, such as an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), language test results, proof of work experience, and police certificates. Applications are typically processed within six months, although the timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the application.

How to Apply for Express Entry

Express Entry is a points-based system that manages applications for permanent residency for skilled immigrants. To be eligible, applicants must meet specific criteria depending on the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), or Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Here are the key requirements:

1. Education

Applicants need at least a high school diploma. However, having higher education (university or postgraduate degrees) significantly boosts your score. For those with foreign degrees, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is required to assess if your qualifications meet Canadian standards.

2. Language Proficiency

Proficiency in English or French plays a crucial role in Express Entry scoring. You must prove your language skills through recognized tests such as IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF. A Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 7 is the minimum required for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. Higher language scores increase your chances.

3. Work Experience

To apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you must have at least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in the past 10 years. This experience must be in a job that is classified under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.

4. Age

The Express Entry system rewards younger applicants. Those between 20-29 years receive the highest points for age, while points decrease after age 30.

5. Canadian Connections

Having worked or studied in Canada can significantly boost your score. Additionally, having close relatives in Canada or securing a valid job offer can further increase your points.

6. Financial Requirements

If you do not have a valid job offer, you must show proof of settlement funds to ensure you can support yourself and your family upon moving to Canada.

7. Job Offer

Though a job offer is not mandatory, having one can add up to 200 points to your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, improving your chances of selection.

These detailed guidelines ensure that applicants are aware of the key factors for Express Entry and how to maximize their chances of success.

What Are the Requirements for Express Entry?

The acceptance of your Express Entry application depends on various criteria. First and foremost, having a sufficiently high Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is crucial. The CRS score is calculated based on factors such as education, language skills, work experience, and adaptability. However, having a high CRS score alone is not enough; the accuracy and completeness of the information provided in your application are equally important. Following the steps outlined below can increase your chances of acceptance:

1. Language Proficiency TestYou are required to submit a valid language test result from an exam recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), such as IELTS or CELPIP for English, or TEF for French. The test must have been taken within the last two years prior to your application date. The Canadian government has set minimum language score requirements, and applications that do not meet these standards are generally rejected. The score you receive in these tests will directly impact your CRS score.

2. Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)If you obtained your degree outside of Canada, you are required to provide an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to prove that your education meets Canadian standards. This report must be issued by an institution authorized by IRCC. Without an ECA report, your application will be considered incomplete.

3. Biometric Data and Police CertificatesWhen applying for immigration to Canada, undergoing a security screening is a critical step. You are required to submit biometric data (fingerprints and photographs), and in some cases, a police certificate may be requested. Failure to provide these documents in a timely manner may lead to the rejection of your application.

4. Medical ExaminationThe Canadian government mandates that all immigration applicants meet certain health standards. Therefore, you will need to undergo a medical examination performed by an IRCC-approved medical professional. Failing to complete this medical check can result in your application being denied.

5. Additional Documents and FeesAt each stage of your application, it is essential to submit all required documents and pay the necessary fees on time. Missing documents or unpaid fees can delay or hinder the process.

At C&C Education, Visa, Immigration Canada, we can guide you through the entire Express Entry application process, ensuring that you meet all necessary requirements. Meeting these criteria is vital to increasing the likelihood of your application being accepted.

What is the Canada Express Entry Score and How is it Calculated?

The Express Entry system is one of the most popular pathways for those looking to immigrate to Canada. In this system, the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score is a critical factor in determining an applicant’s chances of being selected for immigration. The CRS score is calculated based on the following criteria:

●       Age: Up to 100 points (110 points for applicants with a spouse)

●       Education: Up to 150 points

●       Language Proficiency: Up to 160 points (additional points for proficiency in both official languages)

●       Work Experience: Up to 80 points (70 points for applicants with a spouse)

●       Job Offer in Canada: 50 points

●       Education in Canada: Up to 30 points

●       Family Member in Canada: 15 points

●       Provincial Nomination: 600 additional points

While the scoring system may seem complex, you can easily calculate your score using Express Entry Score Calculators. This calculation is a crucial step in your application process, as it helps you determine whether you have a high enough score to receive an ITA (Invitation to Apply) for permanent residency.

Example Calculation:

For a 28-year-old individual with a bachelor’s degree and an IELTS score of 7.0 in all bands, the CRS score could be calculated as follows:

●       Age: 100 points

●       Education: 120 points

●       Language Proficiency: 110 points

●       Work Experience: 50 points (5 years of experience)

Total CRS Score: 380 points

This score may not be sufficient to receive an ITA. In this case, the applicant may need to increase their score by securing a job offer in Canada, improving their language score, or applying for a provincial nomination.
